Fewer reporters now cover statehouses

USA TODAY: The media coverage of statehouse politics is deteriorating as fewer reporters work on the beat once considered one of the most plum jobs in metro daily newsrooms, according to a new report released Thursday…

“In numerous conversations with journalists, legislative leaders and other experts, the one sentiment expressed again and again was concern about the impact of a perceived decline in mainstream media coverage,” said Mark Jurkowitz, associate director of the Journalism Project at the Pew Research Center.

Nontraditional news outlets — online sites and subscription-based trade publications for insiders – have filled some jobs, but not enough to offset the total decline, it says. They make up only about 17% of all reporters covering state government. Texas Tribune, a nonprofit news organization, now operates the largest statehouse bureau in the nation, it says… (more)

We have never understood why the Lancaster Newspapers, Inc. does not also subscribe.

Of course, what is equally worrisome is there is no newspaper in Lancaster to report on the devious business dealings of the Lancaster Newspapers, Inc.and its associates in feeding at the public trough. Except for the ‘squeek’ of NewsLanc, it gets to write its own current events and history. But over time and cumulatively, this mouse does roar.
