Extreme County tax hike, and teaching old dogs new tricks

In today’s article Lancaster County proposes 9.3 percent tax hike for next year”, the reporter correctly states “Under the plan, a property owner with a home assessed at the county average of $148,000 would pay about $553, or an additional $48, next year. The millage rate would increase from 3.416 to 3.735.”

In a similar article last week “City faces tax hike”, the calculation was erroneously based on “market value” rather than the far less “assessment, thus overstating by about 30% the dollar increase to the home owner…

A 9.3 percent tax hike seems excessive, considering inflation has only increased by 2.2% over the course the year.

The Commissioners could save another half a million if they found the courage to defund the bloated and inefficient Lancaster Library System and turned the money over to the individual libraries on a ratio based upon public use….   The System would neither be missed nor lamented.  …  (more)
