Erie to collect unwanted meds to safeguard lake

Warnings about drug use are usually targeted at young people to discourage them from becoming users and abusers.

But in the Erie area, young environmentalists and pharmacy students at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine are making sure that legal drugs, such as prescription painkillers, don’t fall into the wrong hands. In the process, they are educating the public about how potentially toxic chemicals from Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products can end up in our water supply…

According to a news release from Sea Grant and LECOM, people usually throw old medicine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. “This creates opportunities for unintentional poisonings, misuse, diversion and ultimately harming the environment and potentially harming humans. Another poor avenue of medication disposal is flushing medications. This directly allows medications to enter the drinking water,” the news release said…
