End of coal? NRG Energy to shutter coal-fired electricity plants in PA and New Jersey

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS: …Overall, NRG and the Houston-based GenOn Energy are shuttering nine coal-fired plants, including four others in Pennsylvania. The two power companies merged last year. And their planned coal plant closures will begin in June and run through 2015….

“We’re glad to see NRG take responsibility for their dangerous pollution and agree to end their use of coal at the plant, however they must still take action to clean up the dangerous waste left behind, work to safely remediate the site and provide for a fair and responsible transition for the workers and the town,” said Myriam Fallon, a spokesperson for Greenpeace, said of the Portland plant closure.

“We’re glad to hear that this plant, which is the biggest source of air pollution in Northwestern New Jersey, will end their use of dirty coal ahead of schedule. This is a victory for our lungs that will help us all breathe easier. We need to ensure that this plant is replaced with clean, renewable energy like wind and solar – not more harmful fossil fuels like natural gas that promotes dangerous fracking in our communities,” said Jeff Tittle, New Jersey Sierra Club chapter director… (more)
