Editorial: Philadelphia Airport needs facelift

The $5.2 billion expansion plan for Philadelphia International Airport is an urgently needed move to ease delays and accommodate growth.

The blueprint released by the Federal Aviation Administration will require work over the next 12 to 15 years. It’s the welcome result of a process that began in 2000, and has incorporated public hearings and environmental studies.

Under this proposal, two runways would be lengthened and a fifth would be built along the Delaware River, where UPS currently operates. The UPS facility would be moved to the southern end of the airport. The FAA said this option is cheaper than others, would not disrupt I-95 traffic during construction, and would cause less environmental impact than other alternatives. Even better, it would not affect air space. Flight patterns would remain the same…
