Despite perceptions, food stamp fraud low in state

SCRANTON TIMES-TRIBUNE: The rate of food stamp fraud in Pennsylvania apparently is about one-fifth of the national average.
The state’s pursuit of illegally obtained or traded benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in recent years amounts to a fraction of the nation’s 1.3 percent fraud rate, data provided by the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General indicates.

The office, which investigates fraud related to welfare and food stamp benefits and other programs administered through the Department of Public Welfare, filed cases from fiscal 2010 through fiscal 2012 alleging average annual food stamp violations of $1.9 million.
