County begins renovating probation offices next summer

By the first quarter of next year, all staff occupying the Adult Probation offices at 40 East King Street will be relocated to temporary spaces in the county court house and the office building at 150 North Queen, County Administrator Charles Douts predicted. The space at 40 E King will then undergo a $5-7 million renovation process, beginning at some point next summer.

County Commissioner Scott Martin believes that the project will run most efficiently with the building unoccupied and expects that the staff will be moved back within two years.

At the September 9 County Commissioners Meeting, Douts announced the selection of NuTec Design Associates to provide architectural and engineering services, “including architectural, interior design, civil, structural, plumbing, fire protection, HVAC and electrical design.” NuTec will assist the County in developing the specifications of a construction work bid that will likely be released in April 2010.

According to Charlie Douts, NuTec won the $516,300 contract over 20 other architects who responded to the County’s request for proposals. “We have worked with NuTec on various projects,” Douts said, “We have a good track record with them and look forward to them moving this project forward.”

In recent years, NuTec has contracted with the County to provide design services for renovations on 150 N Queen, the county courthouse, and the Public Safety Training Center.
