Corbett’s budget cuts jeopardize progress made with mental illness

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS Op Ed:  While we have made great strides, our continued work is in severe jeopardy should Gov. Tom Corbett’s recent 2012-13 budget move forward as proposed. The governor recommends the most significant changes and cuts to the community mental health system since its inception more than 50 years ago.

Among other mental health-related reductions, these cuts include:

1. $110 million reduction to community mental health services, including more than $5.7 million in Cumberland, Dauphin and Perry counties.

2. An additional $12.6 million reduction to the Behavioral Health Services Initiative and the Act 152 Drug and Alcohol Program.

3. A 20 percent cut to Community Mental Health funding. Additionally, Corbett proposes the remaining Community Mental Health funds be put into county Human Services Development Fund Block Grants…   (more)
