Bill to charge for state police does not go far enough

READING EAGLE Editorial: State Sen. Judy Schwank was on the right track with the bill she introduced last week that would charge some municipalities that don’t have their own police departments when state police must answer calls in those townships and boroughs. But it does not go far enough.

Schwank’s legislation, along with a similar bill introduced in the House by Rep. Mike Sturla, a Lancaster Democrat, would apply only to municipalities with populations of 5,000 or greater that do not provide for their own law-enforcement patrols.

likely would include only Maxatawny and Longswamp townships. Others with smaller populations still would get a free ride…

That is not fair to the taxpayers in cities, townships and boroughs who are paying twice, and in some instances three times: once for their own police departments, a second time for state police to patrol municipalities that don’t have their own coverage and a third time when local police have to leave their jurisdictions to fill in for state police while they are on another call… (more)
