…Task force members said Berks County’s best solution for its libraries would be a dedicated library tax and a consolidated system, but those were not recommended because libraries in smaller communities couldn’t be supported under that structure.
Instead it recommended merging the Reading Public Library and the Berks County Library System into a nonprofit agency called Berks County Public Libraries Inc. and have that group operate the county umbrella system, the city branches and the bookmobile as well as offer services to affiliated suburban libraries…
It is a sad commentary when the leaders of this community believe that it has to settle for something less than the best option because some people would be vocal in opposition to a dedicated library tax and a consolidated system…
