Altoona Mirror: “More aid will warm wallets”

From the Altoona Mirror:

“It might not take the chill off outside, but word that the state will increase grants designed to help low-income households pay their heating bills may thaw out some checkbooks.

“Gov. Ed Rendell announced Tuesday that Pennsylvania will increase the grants provided through the federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program to an average of $326, an increase of about $100. Even more aid may be available if the federal government releases contingency funding.

“Heating-aid benefits are based on type of fuel, county of residency and gross income. Information is available from county assistance offices or on the state Department of Public Welfare Web site.

“About 600,000 Pennsylvania families receive help through LIHEAP. While the assistance won’t cover all of winter’s heating bills, for low-income residents any money helps…

“Rendell also said that the state will extend the LIHEAP program three weeks through April 2. The program had been scheduled to wrap up in mid-March…
