ALJAZEERA

Analysts commented:  In the past, when US officials announced the death of high-ranking al-Qaeda members, commentators often rejected those reports out of hand. But the latest announcement by Obama, on the other hand, seems to be viewed as somewhat more credible.”

“If it is true then we must thank Allah that America was not able to capture him alive,” one commentator wrote. “Else they would be humiliating him like Saddam Hussein.”

WATCHDOG: On the contrary, we suspect the order was to kill Obama on sight.   His capture would have energized his movement, embarrassed the Pakistanis,  and provided Bin Laden with a ‘bully pulpit.’

John Brown’s impact was not what he accomplished at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, but for his speeches at his trial and execution. Had he been killed on the spot, the significance of Brown’s attempt at a slave rebellion would have been greatly mitigated and, for most purposes, his name would have been lost to history.
