A trail’s sale: Manor Township finally gets control of six-mile stretch along river

From the INTELLIGENCER JOURNAL NEW ERA:

…After two years of red tape, [Manor Township Supervisor John S] May was beginning to wonder if he would be in a wheelchair before a trail along a stretch of the abandoned Enola Low Grade rail line from Turkey Hill to the Safe Harbor Dam could be built for public use.

Finally, on June 29, the township purchased the stretch from Norfolk Southern for $452,000.

Not a bad deal for the township, which in return got a $1.25 million check from the railroad…

EDITOR: We find it both heartening and refreshing to see something important accomplished for the public’s benefit without establishment predators gorging themselves at the public trough.  Congratulations to Mr. May and all others involved in bringing about this happy event.

    My wife & I have long been disappointed that we need to travel to York and beyond to find a rail trail. Although it’s nice to get away and visit new areas, it will be wonderful to have a trail here in Lancaster. Plus this trail can help bring some tourists who are interested in more than outlet shopping to Lancaster.
