A promising change in LNP’s editorial pages

Article “Lancaster Newspapers announces shift in opinion policy” advises:

“…The original Republican voice of the Lancaster New Era and the Democratic voice of The Intelligencer Journal — which later gave way to a more conservative and more liberal divide — helped readers for much of their history when there were few other local news outlets.

“So did the use of syndicated columnists from outside the area to give perspective to national and world events. But that world has changed. There are now numerous outlets — print, digital, TV, and radio — to find those views. Our long-time approach is no longer necessary or helpful to present day Lancaster County…

“We don’t want the opinion pages to be an echo chamber, but rather a forum that reflects the diversity of opinions in this area in which people can engage and work through issues respectfully — and those issues won’t be the talking points issued by partisan operatives, but the issues that more directly affect the people in Lancaster County… ”

WATCHDOG: If this means that the editorial pages will no longer pander to the ignorance and prejudices of diehard conservatives and, to a less degree, liberals, we are all for it.

Let columns and editorials be fact based. Perhaps readers will learn something then. It certainly will be instructive to the editors.

  1. When is LNP going to provide its’ readership with the truth about the biggest issue that affects all Lancaster City and County taxpayers….PSP’s golden parachute of a hotel/convention center one-sided agreement. Let’s have a diverse discussion on that issue, not just the same old PSP blather provided by Bernie Harris.

Here is an opportunity for LNP to put their money where their mouth is, rather than in their wallet.

  2. This makes perfect sense and is in line with Steinman Communications’ business objective.

They wish to provide high quality information and entertainment (the letters to the editor were bad enough before) to their marketing and advertising partners. I suspect that means as long as they have advertisers, the quality of their supplied content isn’t relevant to the reader.

The reader isn’t a valued customer to them. Just let the public forum fill the editorial pages. Less employees to keep on the payroll. Its a win win for everyone.
