A major benefit from the merger of the Intelligencer Journal and the Lancaster New Era has been their opposing editorial pages and the addition of a third page for letters to the editors. (At a time when the newspapers no longer investigate, at least the letters help shine light on bad ideas and wrongdoings.)
An excellent example of opposing views is the September 1 Intell’s “A tortured program” across from the New Era’s “Prosecuting CIA would be criminal”.
Not only do we get to read opposing sides to important issues, which is of immense educational and civic benefit, but the competition seems to have inspired better research, more thought, and less ideology. The ongoing ‘debates’ over important issues should be a source of pride to the newspapers and our community.
Concerning whether Attorney General Eric Holder was correct in appointing a Special Prosecutor, we believe it is important to determine whether the legal opinions from attorneys were based on a reasonable interpretation of the law or unwarranted conclusions resulting from coercion or ambition. If they compromised their integrity as government attorneys, then they should be disbarred, as an example to others. We should not countenance abuse of the legal system on the federal, state or the local levels, where we recently rewarded a perpetrator of a ‘witch trial’ with a judgeship.
