$300 million goes uncollected from PA online retailers

Although there is a great deal of disagreement about the tax code, American taxpayers at least expect that the laws that are on the books are actually enforced — we expect everyone to be treated fairly.

A sale is a sale. It’s only fair that a seller is held accountable for their legally owed taxes — what does it matter if it’s done online or off-line? But many small businesses that have populated our Main Streets for decades have been tremendously frustrated because their online competitors are effectively not responsible for collecting sales taxes. This is a considerable advantage for online retailers — and one that is extremely unfair.

Of course, private sector growth has been driven primarily by technology and innovation during the last two decades. The problem is that small businesses on the ground are forced to compete in a broadband economy under policies created in the days of dial-up. Legislators established rules requiring individuals to declare any Internet purchases on their tax returns and pay the full state sales tax legally owed…
