Election to replace Murtha portends change

Voters in the predominantly Democratic but socially conservative district long represented in Congress by the late Rep. John Murtha appear to embrace ideals of the so-called “tea party” movement that favors small government and limited spending, a new poll shows…

Sixty-seven percent of voters said they were familiar with the tea party movement, and half said they would be more likely to support a candidate allied with its principles, compared with 20 percent who said that label would make them less likely to vote for a candidate.

Moreover, 56 percent said they’d be more likely to vote for a successful businessman and political outsider, compared with 27 percent who said government and political experience would sway their votes.

Analyst Mark J. Rozell, a professor of public policy at George Mason University in Virginia, said such sentiments suggest a remarkable shift in politics…
