Youth Intervention Center Receives State and National Accolades

State College, PA, 10-6-11 – The Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center received State and National accolades at the National Partnership for Juvenile Services Award Ceremony at the National Conference and the Juvenile Detention Centers’ Association of Pennsylvania (JDCAP) 2011 annual conference which were both held in October.

The center was the recipient of the “JDCAP 2011 Special Event of the Year”, “JDCAP 2011 Educator of the Year”, the National Juvenile Detention Association “Bob Rader Juvenile Detention Services Worker of the Year”, and the National Juvenile Detention Association “Bob Rader Juvenile Line Staff Worker of the Year” awards.

The center’s Shelter program, received the “JDCAP 2011 Special Event of the Year” award for their Shelter Camp Out/Adopt-a-Highway Project which took place on Friday April 29th into Saturday, April 30th. The weekend focused on teamwork and trust building activities with the message of helping others. The residents also traveled to southern Lancaster County to clean and pick up trash along our two mile stretch along Route 372 

Steve Allen, School District of Lancaster Educator, received the “JDCAP 2011 Educator of the Year” award for his consistent development and implementation of creative educational programming for students consistent with the principles of Balanced and Restorative Justice, continuously works to promote a sense of “team” between all factions of the facility, and serves as a model of dignity and respect for his students. Steve has been teaching residents at the Youth Intervention Center since March 2002.

Jenifer Horn, Detention Youth Care Worker, received the National Juvenile Detention Association’s “Bob Rader Line Staff Worker of the Year” award and Walter Whack, Shelter Youth Care Worker, received the National Juvenile Detention Association’s “Bob Rader Line Staff Worker of the Year”. Both staff were recognized for their continued commitment, dedication, knowledge, and service in the field. Jenifer has been working with residents at the Youth Intervention Center since October 2000 and Walter since January 2004.

Formerly named Barnes Hall, the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center provides temporary safe and secure care for alleged delinquent juveniles and dependent juveniles of Lancaster County. For all juveniles, the center provides protection for the community and the child.
