War chests can outlive some candidates for decades

Even from the grave, two former Pittsburgh mayors wield political clout.

The Friends of Bob O’Connor gave $130,000 to his son’s political committee, Friends of Corey O’Connor, in December and continues to make charitable donations. Two decades after Richard Caliguiri’s death, his committee donated $500 apiece to Arlen Specter’s Senate campaign and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato’s gubernatorial campaign.

“It was hard, but I think it was the right decision,” Judy O’Connor, the mayor’s widow, said of the decision to transfer most of her husband’s campaign contributions to her son’s committee…

After public funerals, survivors of deceased politicians must navigate state or federal laws, depending on the office, to divide up campaign war chests. The state prohibits using campaign money for personal expenses…
