Voters pay little attention to lieutenant governor candidates

Dan Onorato probably won’t have a running mate with a Philadelphia pedigree to balance his Steel City credentials, but that likely won’t hurt his campaign to become the first governor from Pittsburgh in 30 years, analysts say.

The reason is simple: Voters pay little attention to who’s running for lieutenant governor, even though two since 1993 stepped in for governors during illness or vacancy.

“Lieutenant governor candidates historically have not gotten anyone elected,” said G. Terry Madonna, a political science professor at Franklin & Marshall College. “The main job they have is to do no damage to the campaign and to not make a serious mistake.” …
