US to end Afghan combat operations

FINANCIAL TIMES:  The US and Nato will end combat operations in Afghanistan next year and move to providing training for Afghan forces, Leon Panetta, US defence secretary, has said.

The shift to a training and advisory role would get under way in the middle of next year and be complete by the end of 2013, Mr Panetta said a day before a meeting of Nato defence ministers in Brussels on Thursday…

The announcement comes as some US allies are questioning their commitment to keeping soldiers in Afghanistan and are worried about the impact of recently announced US defence spending cuts on Nato’s capabilities…  (more)
