US nuclear official outlines Japan threat

The chief US nuclear safety official offered a dire assessment of the nuclear threat facing Japan, claiming there was no water left at one of the country’s troubled reactors and that radiation levels at the site were believed to be “extremely high”.

The evaluation by Gregory Jaczko, chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in the US, prompted the White House to advise Americans in Japan to stay 50 miles away from the damaged nuclear facility, the same distance it would advise individuals to evacuate if the same crisis were occurring in the US.

The recommendation was more aggressive than Japan’s call for citizens to stay outside of a 20-mile radius from the damaged plants, to which the US government had until Wednesday agreed…
