Ukraine peace deal faces first challenge

FINANCIAL TIMES: Ukraine stepped back from the abyss on Friday as President Viktor Yanukovich and opposition leaders signed a compromise aimed at ending a three-month political crisis that has claimed almost 100 lives. Within hours, the deal appeared in danger of unravelling.

At the end of a day of drama and occasional chaos, the parliament in Kiev also passed legislation that could free Yulia Tymoshenko, co-leader of the 2004 Orange Revolution and Mr Yanukovich’s arch-foe, who was jailed in 2011.

Big questions remained over whether the agreement, which keeps Mr Yanukovich in place until new elections in December, could hold. Radical groups among anti-government protesters rejected it immediately… (more)
