Turnpike tolls rising, for some

MORNING-CALL:  The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has approved an average 10 percent toll increase for 2012 that will apply only to cash payments, a move intended to increase the use of E-ZPass electronic toll collection and save long-term expenses related to human toll collectors.

Effective at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1, the changes will improve the savings realized by paying tolls electronically from the current 7 percent to about 17 percent. EZ-Pass users who signed up for the service through the Turnpike Commission pay a $6 annual fee.

The higher tolls are expected to generate about $23 million in new revenue for calendar year 2012, according to a Commission news release. The commission also decided to raise tolls 3 percent in 2013 and in 2014…  (more)
