Article “Agency that catches welfare cheats makes case for more money” reports “ A small but potent state agency tasked with catching welfare cheats and preventing fraud is anxiously waiting for Gov. Tom Corbett to present his budget.

“Like every department, the Office of Inspector General faces the prospect of cuts or a hold on spending when Corbett delivers his 2011-12 budget plan to the Legislature tomorrow.

“The agency, charged with stamping out waste, corruption and fraud throughout state government, had its budget slashed from $32 million in 2003 to $25 million for the budget year that ends in June and its staff cut from 342 people to 225. Since 2003, the number of welfare investigators has fallen from 190 to 133…” (more)

WATCHDOG: By all means, let’s crack down on those “welfare cheats.” However, the federal government continues to slash funding for the Internal Revenue Service, because we don’t want to annoy those big political contributors !
