The deficit-cutting supercommittee is off to a less-than-stellar start.

Its 12 members, picked by congressional leaders, include some whose antagonism toward any suggestion of tax measures could jeopardize the search for the balanced solution the nation urgently needs.

Pennsylvania’s Sen. Pat Toomey, for example, is well-known for supporting the big tax cuts that helped plunge the nation into deep debt. After being picked for the committee, he said he’s “not interested in some kind of big tax increase.”
