SUNDAY NEWS

“A shine replaces the rust in NW; Partnership executes astonishing transformation of former Armstrong site” in part reports:

“The plans have encountered opposition from residents in Barrcrest and other neighborhoods close to the new rail yard, and they’ve appealed to the state Department of Environmental Protection to overturn its approval of the dump cleanup.”

WATCHDOG: Growl.

In what otherwise was a decent report, the Sunday News gives credence to accusations by opponents to the proposed rail yard location that the Lancaster Newspapers, Inc. refuses to report the facts.

The comment should have mentioned the reason for the opposition: The neighbors believe there was at least one more suitable location that would have avoided the need to relocate the dump and thus saved tens of millions of tax dollars while protecting their neighborhood from unnecessary noise. The objectors repeatedly asked for an independent evaluation, and John Fry of Franklin & Marshall and Tom Beemer and Jan Bergen of Lancaster General Hospital refused to do so.

One of the most disingenuous things we have ever heard was John Fry telling a public meeting that he had made a phone call and learned an alternate site was not for sale! Who did he call, the janitor? And even if, after proper vetting, this were the case, the vacant site could have been taken by ‘Eminent Domain’.
