In a well researched article “Pa. cities left to beg for relief”, Associate Editor Gil Smart reports “City officials also said the possibility that Lancaster Township will seek police protection from Manheim Township rather than the city will put yet another dent in the budget.”

WATCHDOG: This should give additional pause for thought to Lancaster Township Supervisors and residents as to whether they should replace Lancaster City policing with Manheim Township policing.

Lancaster Township wraps around the city and the Township derives much of its employment and cultural sustenance from the city. Even if the City earns a couple of hundred thousand dollars a year from providing police service, it doesn’t seem like a big sacrifice for the Township residents to make to help maintain the City’s fiscal viability. Besides better protection, this is another reason for the Township to retain city police while pursuing the possibility of a regional police force, as recommended by Mayor Rick Gray.
