The July 19 article “Fumo colleague writes to judge” goes on to state “Retired Sen. Gib Armstsrong among some 250 who sent letters; ex-Philadelphia senator gets light sentence for corruption.” It quotes Armstrong as saying “Although we were separated by political philosophy and party registration, we had a friendship based on some common elements of our widely divergent home areas, a friendship that surprised or amused manor our mutual acquaintances.”
WATCHDOG: The final paragraph perhaps better explains the affinity: “Vince was the ultimate deal maker. When you have to govern, you have to get things done. And that’s what he could do.”
If Fumo was the “ultimate”, Armstrong was not far behind, witness special legislation enabling the convention center project. Power has a tendency to corrupt unless an individual has a strong moral compass. Leaders such as Armstrong, John Fry, Dale High and Donald Totaro need to be cognizant of the danger.
Within a year after the NewsLanc series on the convention center is completed, Fumo may have some company from Lancaster.
