SUNDAY NEWS

In his column “Abandoning the schools”, Gil Smart observes  “…budgets are moral documents reflecting priorities. Gov. Corbett simply has bigger priorities than public education. So the School District of Lancaster must lay off librarians because Corbett won’t tax Marcellus Shale gas drillers. Deans of students positions must be cut to pay for new business tax breaks. It really is that simple.”

“The process of abandonment is a long one, but make no mistake, things are going to get worse, not better for schools, urban schools in particular. And this is by design. We don’t talk about this because we’re so focused on this year, but what about next year? Do we really think Corbett and a Republican legislature are going to increase school spending next year? Not on your life. It is likely to fall even further.”

WATCHDOG: If there were a way to recall a governor, we would be distributing a petition.   Corbett’s abject favoritism  ….  better said ‘pay off’ …. to his Marcellus Shale campaign contributors is a disgrace to the state.  He neither will properly regulate them or tax them as do other stsates, yet he is willing to deprive our children of a decent education.

Let’s hope those 800 angy citizens show up to protest when next time Governor Corbett visits Lancaster!

Three wags of the tail for Smart’s column!
