State’s union talks need to bring big changes

The Corbett administration and the negotiators for the state’s 17 unions and 57,000 workers are in the final two weeks of contract negotiations.

While nobody wants a repeat of the dirty laundry aired in Wisconsin earlier this year, the facts should compel everyone to acknowledge some givebacks are in order from the unions.

The Corbett administration is seeking a 4 percent wage cut the first year of a new agreement, followed by 2 percent wage hikes each of the next two years. The administration wants a two-tiered system that would change benefits to new employees, require greater copays and higher deductibles…
