State’s jobless rate falls in May — but jobs fall, too

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE:  At first glance Thursday’s state unemployment report looked like good news. The decline from 7.5 percent to 7.4 percent in the unemployment rate in May wasn’t a lot, but the rate was headed in the right direction.

But an accompanying report based on a survey of employers held bad news. That survey showed that 14,200 jobs were lost in May.

So why did the unemployment rate fall? The civilian labor force fell by 12,000 people, driving the unemployment rate down as people dropped out of the labor market…  (more)
