State contests voter ID law probe

PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW:  Republican Gov. Tom Corbett’s top lawyer told the U.S. Justice Department on Friday that its investigation of Pennsylvania’s voter identification law is unwarranted, unprecedented and maybe politically motivated. 

General Counsel James D. Schultz also answered the Justice Department’s request for voter data, saying Pennsylvania will voluntarily provide the same information filed in a Commonwealth Court case to the department, providing it signs a confidentiality agreement. Schultz’ letter did not spell out the nature of the agreement or why it has to be confidential…

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson, a Republican, earlier this week upheld the law that requires voters to show photo ID when they show up to vote. Supporters say it is to deter fraud and insure the integrity of elections. Opponents call the law, approved in March by a GOP-controlled legislature, a voter suppression measure that will keep qualified voters from voting, saying it will impact low-income people and minorities, many of whom are Democrats…   (more)
