Spy exchange biggest since cold war’s end

Russia and the US on Friday completed the biggest spy swap since the cold war, trading spies between two aircraft on the tarmac at Vienna airport in a bid to prevent damage to an otherwise improved relationship.

In the climax of one of the most dramatic international espionage dramas for many years, the US government flew 10 convicted Russian spies into Vienna airport, in preparation for their transfer to Moscow.

At about the same time the Kremlin sent four Russians who have in recent years been accused of spying for US and British intelligence to the same airfield, in preparation for their subsequent transfer to the UK and US…
