Specter denies 2004 court deal with Santorum

In the face of sharp criticism from his Democratic challenger, U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter on Saturday denied that he promised unquestioned support for Bush administration Supreme Court picks in exchange for former Sen. Rick Santorum’s support for his 2004 re-election.

Mr. Santorum described such a quid pro quo in a weekend appearance before Republican conservative activists in New Orleans. Mr. Santorum’s support, along with that of the Bush White House, was crucial to Mr. Specter’s ability to survive a Republican primary challenge from Pat Toomey six years ago…
