Recently an East Hempfield Township intersection was created with the extension of Noll Drive into Tree Road, at the intersection with Running Pump Road.
Stop signs have been placed on Running Pump but none on Noll / Tree Road.
Since both of these roads are broad and accommodate rapid traffic, a clear danger exists that someone driving on Running Pump won’t stop at the stop sign and collide with a car crossing the intersection. Or a driver on Running Pump may have even stopped but started up again, assuming the oncoming traffic would also be subject to a stop sign…which doesn’t exist.
A township representative courteously explained that they were aware of the danger and were considering a long term solution of a traffic light or ‘round about.’ This is part of a process necessary to obtain permission to install the additional two stop signs, which they agree should be the short term solution.
Let us hope and pray that while all the long term plans are prepared that there won’t be one or more fatal collisions at the intersection.
We wonder why this wasn’t foreseen by traffic engineers as part of the planning of the road development? If it were part of a community by a private developer, such a study would almost certainly be required and the installation of four stop signs would have been in place by the time the road was extended.
Our suggestion: it is a matter of public safety. Send maintenance workers tomorrow morning to install the two signs. Don’t wait for someone to be killed.
