Settlement unlocks US Airways-AMR $11bn deal

FINANCIAL TIMES: US Airways expects to go ahead with its $11bn merger with American Airlines’ bankrupt parent company as early as next month, after the pair agreed a series of divestments to settle an antitrust case that threatened to crash the deal.

Eric Holder, US attorney-general, said the divestments – the most important of which involve giving up 52 take-off and landing slots at Washington’s Reagan National Airport and 17 slots at New York’s LaGuardia – could “shift the landscape of the airline industry”…

“By guaranteeing a bigger foothold for low-cost carriers at key US airports, this settlement ensures airline passengers will see more competition on nonstop and connecting routes throughout the country,” said Mr Holder… (more)
