Sales at GM, Chrysler up 23% in January

USA TODAY:  Auto sales rose 17.3% in January, evidence an auto sales recovery remains firmly underway in an industry that was decimated by the recession.

General Motors and Chrysler Group, survivors of bankruptcy reorganization in 2009, both posted solid 22.7% sales gains compared with the same month last year. Ford Motor, which avoided bankruptcy court but took on huge debt, saw a 13.2% sales increase.

Every major automaker except Mazda saw gains for the month, sales tracker Autodata said. The recovery extended even to Toyota, which had seen its sales tumble in recent months amid a series of high-profile safety recalls…  (more)
