Right track for rail service

Although the Corbett administration has been in step with other new Republican administrations across the country in attacking public education and social service spending, it is on a better track regarding passenger rail service.

After Florida Gov. Rick Scott scrapped a high-speed rail project that had received $2.4 billion in federal stimulus funds, PennDOT applied for $248 million of that money to significantly increase train speeds on the Keystone Corridor, between Harrisburg and Philadelphia.

According to PennDOT, improvements would increase train speeds to 125 mph and reduce travel time between the cities by 20 minutes. Last year 1.27 million people used the service…
