Republican pantheon casts Romney adrift

FINANCIAL TIMES:  … Mr Romney stayed in lockstep with party orthodoxy during the campaign on fiscal issues, saying he wouldn’t support raising even a single dollar in revenue for every $10 of spending cuts.

The haste with which the Republican congressional leadership has dumped this line since the election is more evidence, if any was needed, of how untenable a position it always was.

Mr Romney was an uncomfortable standard-bearer for many of the policies he adopted to win his party’s nomination, from cutting funding for women’s healthcare to electrifying the border fence with Mexico. But if he hadn’t taken them on, the Republicans would never have made him their candidate, something they might bear in mind as they shove him out the back door…   (more)
