‘Recipe for disaster’: Our state, just like Florida, bought into the NRA’s spin on Castle Doctrine

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS Editorial:  …It was a mistake when Pennsylvania passed it last June, and it should be reversed before our state gets its own Martin-esque tragedy. The National Rifle Association backed the passage of the law, but tellingly, most law enforcement did not.
In Pennsylvania, district attorneys opposed it as did the state police. This newspaper also called on the Legislature not to pass the law.

When most of the top brass of the law enforcement community says a law is unnecessary and, worse, will make it harder to prosecute real criminals, we should listen. But Pennsylvania, just like Florida, bought into the NRA’s spin. Sadly, the midstate’s own Rep. Scott Perry, R-York, who is now running for Congress, was the prime sponsor of the bill.

Former Philadelphia and Miami police chief John Timoney said it best in a recent op-ed in The New York Times: “Laws like ‘stand your ground’ give citizens unfettered power and discretion with no accountability. It is a recipe for disaster.” …  (more)
