Recession hits York County’s Catholic schools

YorkDispatch.com: The recession is likely the culprit behind a 500-student decrease in Catholic school enrollment in the area, according to a spokesman with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg…

“They are doing everything they can to keep their child in a Catholic education,” said Peggy Snyder, principal of St. Joseph’s School in Dallastown, which has tried to get extra scholarships to cover the $2,500 tuition.

Enrollment in the diocese, which includes York County, has dropped from about
13,000 to about 12,500 this year, [Joe] Aponik said. ..

“Our children are educated in a caring faith-filled climate where we do our best to give them the faith and academic background that will enable them to do well in life,” said Susan Mummert, St. Joseph’s principal.   (more)
