FINANCIAL TIMES: Republicans are putting intense pressure on Todd Akin, the Republican Senate candidate in Missouri, to resign by Tuesday after his weekend claim that women subject to “legitimate rape” did not usually become pregnant.
The remarks, which were denounced as “offensive” by both President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, threaten to reignite the culture wars that flared during the Republican presidential primary race and to increase Democrats’ advantage with women voters…
But Mr Akin, a sitting congressman backed by the conservative Tea Party movement, apologised for making a “statement in error” when he said on Sunday that abortion was not warranted even in cases of rape because “if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down” and avoid pregnancy… (more)
EDITOR: An example of the mediocrity of media is that there is no discussion as to whether there is a basis in fact in Akin’s accusation. If someone says something that is political incorrect, then it is presumed to be factually incorrect (assuming anyone cares about facts.)
