Poll: Most Americans would vote atheist for president

From USA TODAY:

For the second time in less than a year, the Gallup poll reports that a majority of Americans would vote for an atheist for president.

The latest survey, from June, found that 54 percent of those asked said they would vote a “well- qualified” atheist into the Oval Office— the highest percentage since Gallup began asking the question in 1958, when only 18 percent said they would back a nonbeliever.

On the other hand, the survey showed that those who do not believe in God still come in behind every other group polled for, including gays and lesbians (68 percent) and Muslims (58 percent)…

  1. Considering the mass amount of religious diversity in this nation, perhaps an atheist or agnostic President wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Perhaps then the whole separation of church and state would be held true and the important matters of getting our nation out of financial turmoil, our troops out of affairs that have nothing to do with us, and health care help where needed would be more important then the need for devout “religious folk” to feel they have the right to tell a person what they can and can not do with their body, how to pray, or any other such so-called biblical matters.

I admit I am tired of the debate over what a woman has the right to do with her body. If a woman wants to have an abortion, I’d rather she have a medically sound one then die in some back alley procedure, NO MATTER the reason for it. If a woman wants, or needs, to get on birth control so she could potentially avoid the need for abortion, then let her insurance cover it. Not to mention if a woman needs to be on birth control for health reasons.

I am tired of the debate over allowing same-sex marriage and saying it would ruin “traditional” marriage, especially by men (and women) who have either been married multiple times, or if they aren’t, have had affairs. I don’t care if a man and a man are in a loving, committed relationship and want to marry so they have the same rights to be together forever, especially if a spouse ends up terminally ill. If they aren’t committing a legal crime, they aren’t hurting me.

I am tired of our country being seen as evil because we stick our nose into others’ affairs, but we can’t get our own in order. The entire world is in a recession, yet there are some (including one of our “unemployed” potential Presidential nominees) making millions upon millions of dollars while the rest of the population struggles to rub two pennies together for basic bills and living expenses.

I am not against people practicing or believing in their various religions, but I am against people using it as a crutch to be bigots and hateful people all in the name of G-d, Allah, whatever the case may be. The sad thing is, I see it more in people claiming to be Christians then any other religion in our country.

I have friends of just about every race, religion, and sexual orientation and I love them all because they are my friends and not because of their race, religion or sexual orientation. I, myself, am Pagan. I would never want any of my rights taken away because of that. I would never want the man I consider one of my closest friends, who is also Jewish and Persian, to have his rights taken away for that reason.

I wouldn’t want my Christian best friend to have her rights taken away or to have precedence over another’s rights because they are of a different religion. I want all of us to be treated equally and fairly- because that is what America is supposed to be about. The freedom to live our lives without our rights being limited because we are a different race, religion, or sexuality of those who are supposed to be working for us and fighting for us in our government. The fact that that is NOT the case is disgusting.
