Plum job: Gaming Control Board should not be safety net for former lawmakers

After they retire or lose an election, some lawmakers don’t disappear, instead they end up on a board, commission or in a plum state job.

The latest case in point is former House Speaker Keith McCall of Carbon County. The House Democrats have named him as their caucus choice for a two-year term on the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. McCall will get a salary of $145,000 annually, a sizable increase from the $125,915 he earned as speaker. He replaces another former Democratic lawmaker, Jeff Coy of Franklin County, whose term just expired after he served the maximum six years on the board.

The Gaming Control Board should not be the safety net where former lawmakers can go to make a high salary and enhance their pension after leaving the General Assembly…
