Pennsylvania’s attorney general considers options in Highmark, UPMC dispute

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: …While confirming Monday that the state attorney general has decided something must be done about the four-year dispute between the two Pittsburgh health giants, “It is too early to tell what our proposals might entail,” said Chuck Ardo, spokesman for Ms. Kane. “We have had discussions with a number of people about a variety of possibilities.”

He did acknowledge that establishing a pair of three-person commissions — one for UPMC and one for Highmark — “is certainly among the possible proposals that we will make in response to the ongoing feud.” He added that because Highmark is governed by insurance laws, certain restrictions and regulations have to be considered.

The development follows Commonwealth Court President Judge Dan Pellegrini’s May 29 ruling prohibiting UPMC from locking out Highmark’s estimated 182,000 Medicare Advantage members next year over a dispute about payments for cancer care… (more)
