Payrolls drop 95,000 as gov’t layoffs top private job gains

USA TODAY:  Employers shed 95,000 jobs in September, more than expected, as surprisingly heavy job cuts by local governments and anticipated layoffs of temporary U.S. Census workers more than offset modest private-sector job gains.

The nation’s unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.6%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday However, a broader measure of joblessness that includes  Americans who have stopped looking for work jumped sharply and is now at 17.1%.

Private employers added 64,000 jobs last month, slightly less than the 75,000 projected by economists, as health care, leisure and hospitality, and professional and business services beefed up staffing. … (more)
