PA Spent $3.05 Million In 2009 To Protect Gov, Lt. Gov, First Familes

In the wake of the weekend’s tragic shootings in Arizona, there’s been a fair amount of talk about assigning personal protection to members of Congress. This struck the bosses at the home office as a fairly pricey proposition. So they asked us to run down how much it costs to provide state police protection to Gov. Ed, the lieutenant governor and their families.

According to the administration, the state spent $3.05 million on salaries and overtime the Executive Service Detail, as it’s known, in 2009 — the most recent year for which data were available.

Not unreasonably citing security concerns, officials would not go too micro about how the detail functions or how many members are in it at any one time. But, based on conversations with the State Police and independent security experts, we do know the following…
