Opinions mixed on bill that would give state income tax back to companies that create new jobs

HARRISBURG PATRIOT-NEWS:  ….State lawmakers have approved a bill that would allow some businesses that create new jobs to keep nearly all of their employees’ state income taxes. Qualifying businesses could retain 95 percent of their newly hired workers’ state income taxes.

Supporters call it a way to give new employers a clear cash value to locate in Pennsylvania, without requiring taxpayers to shell out millions of dollars up front for projects that may or may not succeed. Only companies creating jobs get rewarded, proponents say.

But critics see it as nothing less than a private enterprise version of old-style political patronage systems. In opponents’ eyes, workers are forced to pay a kind of “job tax” to their employers, and the state is essentially subsidizing private businesses…  (more)

EDITOR:  The right wing bemoans the deficit and then exempts itself from paying taxes.  The middle class doesn’t seem to care.
