Ontario Liberals Elect First Openly Gay Canadian Premier

WALL STREET JOURNAL:  Ontario’s governing Liberal party elected Kathleen Wynne as party leader, elevating the first openly gay politician as the premier of a Canadian province.

Ms. Wynne, whose victory came in a party vote Saturday to succeed Premier Dalton McGuinty, takes the reins of Canada’s most populous province and one of its most powerful engines of economic growth. She joins three other women already running Canada’s most powerful provinces—British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec.

Ms. Wynne, who won a tight race against rival Sandra Pupatello, gathered 57% of the 2,016 valid votes cast by party delegates. In a speech early Saturday during the final presentation of candidates, she vowed to balance the province’s budget and maintain a “steely” fiscal resolve, amid worry among several Canadian provinces over high debt loads, despite Canada’s relatively low federal debt…  (more)
